This course covers the theory and application of empirical methods for applied microeconomic research. Topics may include randomized control trials, panel data techniques, difference-in-differences, the synthetic control method, instrumental variables, and regression discontinuity designs.
Learning Hours: 120 (36 Lecture, 6 Group Learning, 78 Private Study)
Requirements: Prerequisite ECON 255/3.0 and a minimum grade of a C in (ECON 251/3.0 or STAT 361/3.0). Exclusion ECON 352/3.0.
Offering Faculty: Faculty of Arts and Science

Course Learning Outcomes:

  1. Use industry-standard software to manipulate and explore data sets, interpreting output from basic commands, and understanding how to handle common errors, problems and inconsistencies.
  2. Choose among common specifications of multivariate regressions and probits, while using the results produced by software to test hypotheses, form predictions with confidence intervals, and identify potential problems with common economic models.
  3. Understand how to relax limitations of standard (ideal) assumptions in econometric models, to handle complex data sets and tackle deeper questions of economic importance.
  4. Read applied econometric literature using techniques covered in the course to find the key aspects of the analysis and possibly weaknesses.
  5. Articulate a research question and communicate in written form a detailed discussion of empirical evidence related to this question.
